Team Placement & Grading

Parents Role

Please remember that the purpose of the grading is not to get your child as high a grade as possible but to have them graded into a level of competition that best suits their ability. This will enable your child to have a chance in contributing to the team, achieve some soccer skill development and receive enjoyment from participation.

Please ensure you have your child at grading at least 10 minutes prior to the scheduled start time.

Prior to the season starting, your assistance will be required to carry out various tasks to ensure the season runs smoothly. Please assist by helping out when and wherever possible.

Team Placement & Grading

For the Grading & Team Placement dates please go to the events calendar.

Grading of players for teams (8 years and older) and placement of players in the SSG (Small Sided Games) teams (Under 6 & 7) plus selection of coaches and managers takes place over the two weeks following the second registration day. It is club policy that all players attend grading and be financial. Results of grading and team allocation must be finalised before the end of February.

If you have not heard from a coach, manager or committee member regarding team placement by the start of March, please contact the club registrar(2010) Anita Tinker, 0417 688 159, registrar@ greystanesfc.com.au   or by using the general enquiry form.

  • Parents of Children registering in the SSG (Small Sided Games) will be contacted regarding season commencement in February 2010.

Please note;

  • Players must attend both nights
  • Advise club registrar(2010) Anita Tinker, 0417 688 159, registrar@ greystanesfc.com.au   if unable to attend asap, so that your inability to attend the right grading night may be noted
  • No player will be graded unless they are wearing appropriate footwear and compulsory shin pads
  • Age groups where two nights are indicated may be reduced to one night if approved by Club Committee
  • To avoid any misunderstanding, we can only assume that if a player does not attend a grading night, he/she has decided not to play in the current season and their name will be removed from team lists

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

Grading can be a stressful time, particularly for parents. In order to demystify the process, the Club's grading policy is outlined here in the form of FAQs.

We grade teams from the Under 8 age group to Under 17's. Teams in the older age groups (seniors and O/35's) are often organised by the players themselves and are therefore not necessarily graded although the Club does have a say on what division the teams apply for, usually based on the previous Season's results.

As teams from Under 9's and above play competition soccer, grading is the only fair and equitable way of ensuring teams play with and against players of similar skills and ability. Grading ensures that your child's involvement in the game, their contribution to the team, as well as their soccer skills is optimised. While children may not always be able to play with their best friends, experience has shown that they quickly form friendships and bonds with their new team mates. It is only recently that we have started to Grade the Under 8's. We believe this is beneficial as it helps prepare for following competition year.

With the exception of Goalkeepers, players are not usually graded into team positions (eg, fullback, right fullback, right midfield, striker, etc). Rather they are graded into teams based on their overall performance at grading sessions. Information from the previous year's coach on each player's ability and commitment (Player Assessment Sheet) are taken into consideration by the Club Assessors at each grading session.

Time, weather and resources permitting, grading sessions are generally run over a two week period and they are compulsory. If your child has a problem attending a grading sessions please contact the Committee or Age Group Co-Coordinator immediately. If a child has played with the Club previously but is unable to make sufficient grading sessions for a fair assessment to be made, then the Grading Panel may examine the Player Assessment sheets completed by the coach at the end of the previous season prior to making a final decision regarding their graded position. Similarly any new players who do not attend grading sessions will be placed in the lowest graded team and will be assessed at upcoming trial games if necessary.

At the end of each season coaches are asked to fill out Player Assessment Sheets. These sheets contain an assessment of individual player performances throughout the season both at training and during matches.

The Assessors are made up of experienced Club coaches and/or players. While the Club strives to appoint 4 independent coaches to a grading panel, this is not always possible. Limited numbers of suitably qualified graders sometimes means that many of the Club's most qualified and experienced coaches grade ages that include their own children. However, where this occurs that person is disqualified from giving their child a grading score.

Very successful! While grading involves a degree of subjectivity this is significantly lessened by the following:

The grading panel is headed by experienced, officially qualified and trained coaches.

Final decisions are based on consensus after input of all members of the grading panel.

The grading procedures follows 'best practice' principles and cover a broad range of soccer skills including ball-skill drills and small sided games.

Team selection should be finalised by the 1st March and you will be advised either at the completion of the grading sessions or by phone call from either the Coach or Age-Group Co-Coordinator.

Initially, teams are structured to allow for the borrowing of players, late registrations and any possible re-grades. The Club does not allow for players to be re-graded down (without their consent) but players can be moved up. For this reason higher graded teams may possibly start with fewer players than the team below.

General issues, comments or enquiries regarding grading or the grading process should be directed to the Club Secretary.

The training times are organised by your Coach, usually after consultation with his/her player's parents to find a time most suitable and also field availability.

Absolutely! Anybody involved with your child signs a Prohibited Employment Declaration and through the implementation and strategies that assist in preventing child abuse from occurring our club takes a pro-active role in helping to foster a safe and positive environment for every child to participate. Copies of our Policy Statement or Procedures are available on request.

Unless Clubs or Councils have closed the grounds because there is a danger to the players through poor field condition, play will proceed, raining or not. Washed out games are played within two weeks of the washout. Rooball teams (U/ 6, 7 & 8) do not have to play these catch-up games if they do not wish as their activities are 'non-competitive' in accordance with GDSFA's regulations.

See our Weather Info page for more details and further information.

Managers are sourced within your own team. Coaches are ideally sourced from within your team, particularly in the younger age groups. If the Club has any 'free' coaches they will be appointed as the need arises. To assist all coaches, the Club, at the Club's expense, runs Coaching Courses.

If you are unsure about anything, please contact the committee using the general enquiry form.
